The old adage ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ was never more true than where your vulva is concerned.

Our collective insecurities have created an entire cosmetic industry of vaginal or labial ‘rejuvenation’ or skin bleaching treatments. The perfect vagina is a myth – and yet there is an entire industry built around the myth that vaginas need pampering. The truth is, vaginas don’t need improving and they don’t need ‘maintaining’ – they look after themselves²⁴.

If you do want to go ahead, remember that cosmetic ‘beauty’ treatments such as laser hair removal, skin bleaching or vagacials can be harmful if they aren’t carried out by a qualified practitioner. Anything that uses chemicals on the most sensitive part of your body should be treated with absolute caution.

Vulva skin tone differs from person to person, and it’s normal for the vulva to be darker than the surrounding skin²⁵. Vulval skin bleaching plays into white-centric beauty standards and can be really dangerous.

All natural, waxed,
shaved: it’s up to you

Some women like a Brazilian wax every four weeks, others prefer to let everything grow naturally. It’s an individual choice. But it’s worth thinking about the job pubic hair has to do before you remove it.

Pubic hair is there to cushion your skin from friction cuts and stop bacteria from entering²⁶. Shaving and waxing are considered fairly routine, but they can leave the vulval area open to infection from tiny micro-cuts and can create itchy red bumps and ingrown hair²⁷. Always use clean razors that only belong to you. And like any hair – wear it how you want.
