There are no ‘normal’ vulvas. They’re all different.

Where did you begin to learn about what the vulva and vagina look like? Was it formed from illustrations of women’s anatomy at school? A mirror at home? A vast number of us shape a view taken from pornography. Until now, the sex industry has played a big part in telling the world how women’s vaginas should look, by presenting a misconception of what the vast majority of vulvas look like – tight, bright, light and neat – when in fact, there are no ‘normal’ vulvas because there is no such thing as normal²⁸.

A closer look at the
anatomy of the vulva

Looking at your own anatomy in the mirror is always a good idea to learn about your own vagina – the internal part – and the vulva – the external area around your vaginal opening. Some people have ‘innies’ but statistically speaking, ‘outies’ (this is where the lips of their labia are longer and more visible) are more common. Some may be asymmetrical²⁹.

Depending on your age, shapes, colour and size can change over time as Oestrogen and other hormones make the vulval area darker – particularly during pregnancy when it can feel swollen with blood flow³⁰. This can lessen approaching menopause³¹. At this time, the labia (that’s the lips of your vulva) can look lighter in skin tone and often thinner. The bottom line is that we’re all slightly different and all the more beautiful for it³².
